Great question, huh?
At this point in my life there are so many directions I could go. I've spent my whole adult life in the computer field, from night time computer room operations to website design to tech support. While I am very grateful for the long-term employment I've had in the past, just because one is good at something doesn't mean that it is a passion or that one is destined to stay pigeon-holed in that vein. That's not to say that in the right situation, continuing in the tech support realm could easily be mutually beneficial.
One avocation that comes to mind first is something in the life coaching or tutoring field. I am always the one that friends and (thanks to the internet) strangers alike seek out for advice. I do believe the "teach a man to fish" axiom is true. In both my former and current jobs I have been called upon, however unofficially, to coach a co-worker more than once. I believe a career as a life (or specific subjects) coach, particularly over the internet, would be a great fit. Speaking of which, I have telecommuted/worked from home before and absolutely loved it! I have the discipline to work that much on my own and would be more than open to doing so. In the Tim Ferriss "4 Hour Work Week" manner, I could be a very good long-distance personal assistant. I can find pretty much everything and anything on the internet and can prepare reports and do online errands for you as well.
Other career areas include:
The one thing that would probably not be a good fit would be anything in sales, especially outcall sales or other commission-based work. I've tried it several times over the years, mostly in multi-level marketing, and I find that I got along famously with the clients but could never get them to buy. I value a steady salary/income and not knowing whether I'm getting paid next week is not a stress I would choose at this time. I realize that I am very blessed with many varied talents and believe that I can be of greater service to the Universe in a more amenable career. Thank you once again for taking the time to peruse this page.
- Private detective (I have the knack and the interest; perhaps there is a firm that will sponsor my license?)
- All-around Girl Friday (gee, do they say that anymore?) or executive assistant to run a small office
- Computer/IT teacher at a career college
- Event planner (anything from weddings to dog shows)
- Being in the broadcasting field again, whether terrestrial, satellite or internet (production, marketing, air talent)
- Working with either a law firm or tax firm (I should have been a lawyer and have a zeal for detailed arguments)
